Studies on Iron Metabolism in the Thyroidectomized Rabbits

Abstract
The author observed the changes in plasma iron concentration in the thyroidectomized rabbits, and observed, further, the recovery process of the decreased plasma iron concentration after a removal of massive blood cells in the thyroidectomized rabbits or in such rabbits successively administered with iron by enteral route, and the accumulating process of the iron given by venous route in the thyroidectomized rabbits.
1. The plasma iron level decreased progressively in the thyroidectomized rabbits but reached an equilibrium at about one week following the operation.
3. The decreasing reaction of the plasma iron concentration of the thyroidectomized rabbits to the
removal of massive blood cells was milder than that of the intact rabbits.
3. The iron absorption of the alimentary tract decreased in the thyroidectomized rabbits than in normal ones.
4. The accumulating ability of iron of the tissues in the thyroidectomized rabbits seemed to be almost equal to that of the intact rabbits, but the excessively stored iron in the tissues was released more rapidly in the former than in the latter.
5. It was suggested that the difference in the iron metabolism between the thyrodectomized and intact rabbits might be not a qualitative, but a quantitative one.
